Capricorn Voyager in Chevron's Ad

if you have been watching the new "Untapped Energy" advertisement from Chevron, the people that brought us Energyville, and thought that you would like more information on the vessel appearing in the ad - the Capricorn Voyager - then you have come to the right place.

The Chevron ad touts that its employees are "citizens of the world" and it appears that the Capricorn Voyager is similarily global. From a quick search it does appear that this is a Chevron oil tanker. It was made by Samsung, presumably in South Korea. It is flagged in Bahamas. The owner of the vessel is Clio Marine Inc., which according to Equasis is a Japanese company but according to the American Bureau of Shipping in May 2007 is Liberian.

The Capricorn Voyager is a fairly large but not enormous oil tanker. It clocks in at 58,442 gross tons. Overall, it seems to be a pretty normal and recently built oil tanker.

Stumbled across your blog whilst searching for a photograph of the Capricorn.

Having sailed on the vessel from September '07 to Christmas '07 as a Deck Officer Cadet I can provide a bit more insight into the vessel for you and your readers.

Your basic facts are spot on, she is an Aframax class 105,000 dwt oil tanker. As you say, she is very newly built (delivered February 07 if my memory serves).

The ship is one that Chevron are very proud of as its major purpose is to act as an Officer Cadet training vessel. It has accomodation, facilities and training materials for upto twelve cadet officers (usually six engineering cadets and six deck cadets).

Like all merchant vessels operating internationally there is a wide range of cultures and nationalities aboard, and as such, it fits with the theme of the ad. As an example, whilst I sailed on the vessel there were crewmembers from: Britain, Ireland, Croatia, Slovenia, Poland, Italy, Latvia, India, Angola and the Phillipines. Quite the melting pot of nationalities all working very well together to run the ship and train the cadets to a very high standard.

I would just like to re-iterate that I am not some sort of Chevron marketing man (I know how distrustful people can be of 'big oil') but simply an Officer Cadet who has sailed on this vessel.

I hope I have managed to shed some light on the vessel for you.

Craig Leppert (Deck Cadet)

I photographed this ship (broadside) running light dropping anchor across the bay from Pier 96 on 2/13/10. Like they said, fairly new looking.
